Safe Return - Orlando area
Emergency Survival for Children & Youths age 10 to 17
The Safe Return course is our training segment for parents wanting wilderness survival training for their children, ages 10-17. Please note that this course does require at least one parent or guardian attend with the child(ren). It is a fun, yet serious course with plenty of hands-on action for the youth in attendance. The group will learn together and have fun working as a team. The Safe Return course is gentle and comfortable in it's approach.
Students are permitted to overnight in personal backpacking tents and are allowed a breakfast meal, snacks, and an evening meal. The course concludes with a written test and a gift will be awarded the top youth scorer and top adult scorer.

Curriculum:
Positive Mental Attitude. Students will learn the psychological and physical aspects of survival. They will better understand panic and give-up-itis
and the fears associated with a wilderness survival situation. Students will learn about Positive Mental Attitude and why it is Priority One.
Wilderness First Aid. Students will learn why wilderness first aid is different from "first aid". They will learn about mechanism of injury, patient
assessment, and the stabilization of a patient. Students will better understand how to avoid and know the symptoms and treatment for wounds, fractures, sprains, strains, dehydration, heat exhaustion, hypothermia, insect bites, anaphylaxis shock, and poisonous snake bites. They will learn the contents of a good first aid kit and its importance.
Shelter. Students will learn the importance of shelter in a survival situation and will learn how to construct various types of shelters using natural and
man-made materials. Appropriate knots, hitches, and lashings will be taught. Students will construct a shelter of their choice in two-person teams.
Firecraft. Students will learn the nine reasons for having a fire in a survival situation. They will learn fire safety and will better understand the fire triangle.
They will learn how to prepare, construct, ignite a fire by various means, and maintain a fire. Students will learn to cook over a fire. Personal fears associated with building a fire will be greatly diminished.
Signaling. Students will learn how to attract attention to themselves to initiate rescue. They will learn the various methods and types of effective signals.
They will learn the importance of a whistle and mirror in a wilderness environment. They will learn how to signal using a whistle, mirror, and signal fire.
Students will learn the use of an international distress signal.
Water. Students will learn the importance of water in a wilderness environment and a survival situation. They will learn various means of water purification
and procurement. Students will procure drinking water from natural sources.
Food. Students will learn the unimportance of food in a survival situation. They will learn why bugs and not plants. Students will gather bugs and prepare
over a fire. Various types of traps and snares will be taught.
Personal Survival Kit. Students will learn the importance of a survival kit and its proper contents.
Topographic Map. Students will learn the importance of and how to read a topographic map.
Improvised Equipment. Students will understand the importance of improvising equipment. They will construct an improvised piece of gear.
