Kayak Tour into the Mangrove tunnel - Marco Island Area

A surreal Experience out of this World

The Everglades area is a vast and varied ecosystem and has the largest mangrove forest in North America. Throughout the forest are brackish "lakes" whose waters are a mix of "sweet" (fresh) and salt water. Interconnecting these lakes are narrow, flowing tidal creeks. The mangrove forest grows to very edge and even over the tops of these creeks forming a canopy or a tunnel. The sunlight (or moonlight) shimmering through the canopy, the noise deafening affects of the forest vegetation and the sounds of the forest itself, make for a surreal experience in the tunnels.

The lakes, surrounded by mangroves, are refuges for herons, egrets, stilts, ducks, wood storks, spoonbills, alligators, otters and a gamut of fishes. The dense canopy over the creeks regulates moisture and humidity allowing orchids, mosses and bromeliads to thrive.

Clothing depends on weather conditions, which may change quickly. Always bring jacket or sweater - just in case. Shoes must be suitable for a kayak and for walking on beach.
Protection from sun for head, neck and shoulders is imperative!
